E3 2011 Games We Love Awards!

We came! We played! We handed out awards. Well, not really... We just took note of games that stood out and will hand out the awards here. Well, actually, there will be no handing out whatsoever, but there will be awards. And lots of them!

Best Hand-Cramping Experience

Kid Icarus

© Nintendo

Kid Icarus was intense! Flying and running around blasting monsters in 3D is as fun as it sounds. The control scheme takes getting used to, though. The circle pad moves your character, and the stylus aims your fire. It works well once you get the hang of it, but my hand did start getting a little crampy towards the end. I need to train harder!

Best Biblical Beatdown

El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron

© UTV Ignition Games

Who says learning about the Bible can't be fun? Especially when it's a tripped-out, action-packed game loosely based on the Book of Enoch. I love it when developers push the envelope of design and this game looks amazing. Plus, you get to run around in designer jeans beating up fallen angels. Really!

Most Difficult Math Problem

Street Fighter X Tekken

© Capcom

Knuckle down and hit the books, it's math time! Street Fighter X Tekken = time spent dreaming of an amazing fighting game crossover divided by game fans' desire to beat up each other's favorite franchise characters multiplied by two titles. Don't forget your combo multiplier. And show your work!

Most Japanese Game

Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny

Some Japanese developers are modifying thier games in attempt to capture more of the Western market. Natsume doesn't do that, and I thank them for it. I love offbeat Japanese titles, and this game is as Japanese as it gets. It has ultra-cute character designs, a colorful world and tons of things to collect. Also, it's a strange hybrid of farm sim, monster battler and dungeon crawler. Long live JRPGs!

Cutest Game

Rayman Origins

© Ubisoft

Sadly, over the years Rayman has been overshadowed by Ubisoft's other massive game franchises. He hasn't had a major release since the PS2 era! Well, he's back and looking better than ever. The lush, hand-drawn backgrounds make this game stand out even on the crowded E3 floor. This madcap, 4-player platformer is oozing with personality. Welcome back, Rayman!

Most Descriptive Title

Orcs Must Die

 © Robot Entertainment

The name says it all. Orcs must die in Orcs Must Die. Hordes of orcs, that must die, besiege your fortress, and your mission is to shoot, hack and set up diabolic traps. We're dying for this game to come out, but not dying as much as the Orcs, who must die, will be dying when it comes out.

Best New Hope for a Wayward Franchise

Sonic Generations

© Sega

After being burned with so many supbar Sonic games, it's hard to get your hopes up. Sonic Colors was a step in the right direction, but Generations looks to bring the franchise back to its roots. It has the stuff that made the series great to begin with, such as tearing through beautiful level after level at eyewatering speed while collecting as many shiny things as possible. Let's hope for the best!

Strangest Spin-Off

Final Fantasy XIII-2

© Square Enix

It's not weird that they're spinning a game off of Final Fantasy XIII. This company's become infamous for rehashing, remaking and spinning off their nearly beat-to-death Final Fantasy franchise. What's weird is that this game actually looks interesting! It takes the great battle system from XII and adds a Pokémon element to the mix. You can fight monsters, capture them and then add them to your group! Finally, my dream of fighting with a Flan by my side can come true!

Best Game to Blame Your Mistakes on Your Teammates

Trine 2

© Atlus

The 3-player action platformer returns with more puzzles and cooperation demands. Playing it is like trust/fall exercises, but the two people who are supposed to catch you miss because they are too busy arguing over who is going to catch you. Next time someone blames your character for not getting their timing right, say, "I'm Trine n' 2. Ooooh!"

Best Game For Buddhist Monks

Journey

© that game company

Journey the game (no, not the Atari 2600 masterpiece) is something of an anomaly. The goal of the game is not clear. There are no instructions, just things far off in the desert to explore. As your character glides over beautiful sand dunes listening to the soothing ambient sounds, you'll melt into the couch. Remember—getting to your destination isn't important. It's enjoying the journey there that counts. Meditate on that, grasshopper.

Best Game of E3!

Skull Girls

© Reverge Labs

Yes, Skull Girls is my pick for the best game at E3. Why? It's creative! It's imaginative! It's funny! It's kooky! It's well-animated! It has a rock-solid fighting engine designed by a fighting game tournament winner! It has wonderful character designs! It doesn't take itself too seriously! It wasn't created in a boardroom by a bunch of suits with dollar signs in their eyes.  It was created by people who really want to make fun games. I haven't laughed so much playing a video game in a long time. It's great medicine for the jaded gamer.
