Yu-Gi-Oh! monsters have come in many different colored frames: Normal (yellow), Effect (orange), Fusion (purple), Ritual (blue) and Synchro (white). But there haven’t been any black-framed monsters...until now! The black-framed Xyz Monsters (pronounced ik-seez) debut this summer in Starter Deck: Dawn of the Xyz.
What is Xyz? They’re a brand new kind of monster that you put in your Extra Deck. And they’ll you're your regular ol’ monsters into otherworldly champions!
Summoning Xyz Monsters is as easy as...A-B-C! Each Xyz Monster tells you exactly what kind of monsters you need. If you have the listed monsters face-up on your side of the field, stack them on top of each other. Then, take your Xyz Monster from the Extra Deck and put it on top of the stack. The Materials become part of the monster!
Quick Facts about Xyz Monsters
- Xyz Monsters are Summoned using monsters with the same Level.
- The Xyz Material Monsters get piled up underneath the Xyz Monster when you Summon it.
- You can only use actual Monster Cards, not Monster Tokens, to Summon an Xyz Monster.
- Xyz Monsters have a Rank, not a Level. They’re unaffected by cards that are based on Levels.
- When a card tells you to “Detach” an Xyz Material, send that Material to the Graveyard.
You don’t need special monsters to use Xyz Monsters in your Deck. Any time you have monsters of the same Level as an Xyz Monster’s rank, you can Xyz Summon! Here are some Xyz Monsters you’ll definitely want for your Extra Deck!
Gachi Gachi Gantetsu
Gachi Gachi Gantetsu gives all your monsters 400 extra ATK and DEF! Your opponent will have to destroy this monster 3 times to get rid of it for good.
Cool Combo: Summon The Agent of Creation – Venus, then pay 1000 Life Points to Special Summon two Level 2 Mystic Shine Balls from your Deck. Then Xyz Summon! You can find both cards in the Lost Sanctuary Structure Deck.
Detach one of Leviathan Dragon’s Materials to make it a 2500 ATK monster! If you need to defeat a really tough monster, detach the another Material later to make its ATK 3000!
Cool Combo: Summon Tour Guide From the Underworld and use its effect to Summon another Level 3 monster from your Deck. Then Xyz Summon! Tour Guide From the Underworld is from Extreme Victory.
Number 39: Utopia
Detach one of Utopia’s Materials to negate any attack! With 2500 ATK, Utopia can keep on attacking your opponent while it uses its effect to defend your weaker monsters!
Cool Combo: Use Wind-Up Magician’s effect to Summon another Level 4 “Wind-Up” monster from your Deck. Then Xyz Summon! The new “Wind-Up” monsters are from Generation Force.
Tiras, Keeper of Genesis
Tiras, Keeper of Genesis gives you a two-turn burn of invincibility! While he has Xyz Materials, Tiras can only be destroyed in battle, and his 2600 ATK makes that tough. Also, every turn that it battles, you get to destroy any opposing card! Tiras loses one Xyz Material during each of your End Phases to pay for its incredible effects.
Cool Combo: Summon a Level 5 monster like Cyber Dragon, then Summon Gagaga Magician. You can change Gagaga Magician’s Level to any number from 1 to 8, so change it to Level 5. Then Xyz Summon! Grab Cyber Dragon from the Machina Mayhem Structure Deck and Gagaga Magician from Generation Force.
